What is a Chassis/Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) number?

In order for us to produce documentation for your vehicle we will need the unique 17 character alphanumeric Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)/Chassis number. This will be located on the vehicle itself or on the logbook - if you cannot locate this please refer to the owner's manual or contact your local dealer.

If your vehicle is a 1982 model or earlier then it is likely to have a shorter VIN (e.g. a sequence of 10 numbers or less). Unfortunately we do not hold any records for these vehicles, to obtain any information or documentation please contact the Wolfsburg Museum:

Importing a vehicle into the UK

1) I am importing a Right or Left hand drive vehicle over 10 years old from an EU or Non-EU country

Regardless of the vehicle origin, if your vehicle is over 10 years old it can be registered through the DVLA with a dating letter and a current MOT. We can provide a Dating Letter which will state the date of manufacture.

2) I am importing a vehicle under 10 years old from an EU country

If you are importing a Vehicle under 10 years old from another EU country you will need a European Certificate of Conformity (COC) to present to the DVLA.

If you have a commercial vehicle older than 2009 a COC will not be available, to establish your vehicle is compliant with UK road regulations please contact VOSA for an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) inspection.

NB: We are commonly requested from VOSA to supply supporting evidence for commercial vehicles entering the UK from Southern Ireland. If this is the case please contact VWG Ireland for assistance (please see 'Useful Contacts').

3) I am importing a vehicle under 10 years old from a Non-EU country

If you are importing a vehicle from a non-EU Country a COC will not be available, please contact VOSA for an Individual Vehicle Approval (IVA) inspection.

4) I am importing a Left-Hand Drive Vehicle under 10 years old from an EU country

To import a Left-Hand Drive vehicle you must ensure the following modifications have been made to ensure compliance with UK road regulations:

  • Headlights are permanently adjusted to suit UK traffic

  • Rear fog lights operate as a pair or only on the right hand side

  • Speedometer is graduated in MPH

  • Two exterior rear-view mirrors

You will need to present a Certificate of Conformity and evidence that any necessary modifications have been completed (eg. receipts/invoices etc.) to the VCA before registering the vehicle through the DVLA.

I've imported a vehicle from another country; how much warranty does it have?

All countries have different warranties according to the legislation and legal responsibilities applicable in that country.

For imported vehicles, the only way to confirm your warranty is to take your chassis number to your local Volkswagen Retailer who can check our Factory system and advise what warranty is applicable for your vehicle.

Please do not assume that you will have the standard warranty applicable to UK vehicles as this is unlikely to be the case.

In order to ensure that any warranty you do have remains valid, please abide by the stated terms and conditions of the warranty.

I've imported a vehicle from Europe; can you tell me what sort of roadside cover is provided?

Personal imports originating from Western Europe will generally be covered by a service called 'Mobility Guarantee' from the country which supplied the car. Mobility Guarantee is limited in terms of the cover and duration it provides (12 months) and details can be found in the vehicle information wallet. Generally this service covers failure due to mechanical or electrical failure of the vehicle and does not provide help for such things as punctures, accident recovery, out of, or wrong fuel or lost keys. We therefore strongly recommend that you purchase our comprehensive Volkswagen assistance cover. For more information, please contact 0500 275 577.

Can I use Bio-Diesel in my vehicle?

Volkswagen Group designs and manufactures its engines to function correctly with standardised European fuels. This not only ensures optimum performance, reliable running and engine longevity but ensures that environmental emissions regulations are met over the life of the vehicle. The fuel standards in question allow for the inclusion of an amount of biofuel (up to 5% within BSEN590) and our engines have been designed to accept this without modification, warranty restriction or increased maintenance. No standards currently exist for fuels which contain more that 5% biofuel and therefore in order to protect our owners from potential adverse effects from unknown fuel blends we do not recommend the use of any fuel other than standard petrol or diesel. For further information owners and drivers are requested to contact their local Dealer or refer to their owner's handbook.

Do VWCV recommend LPG conversions?

How does VWCV monitor the level of service provided by the van centre network - in particular warranty, recall & service issues?

We do set specific and general parameters for all our Van Centres, particularly on subjects such as recalls and warranty repairs, and we do expect a certain level of service from them. However, the Van Centres within our network are independent businesses and are in fact franchisees of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles , and they are ultimately responsible for the level of service they provide. Our Customer Service Centre is more than happy to liase with Van Centres on your behalf if you are unable to obtain a satisfactory resolution to an enquiry or issue.

Volkswagen Amarok - statement for VW Amarok forum, July 2011

All Amaroks (excluding Highline Permanent 4MOTION models) built up to and including week 29 (late July 2011) had to be issued with an IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) from VOSA rather than the usual ECWVTA (European Whole Vehicle Type Approval). This is due to specific UK market payload requirements to enable VAT-registered customers to reclaim VAT. This has not involved any technical changes to the vehicle, and all Amaroks can legally be driven on the UK roads. All Amaroks built from week 30 for the UK will have the appropriate ECWVTA.
