Volkswagen California Concept interior

The all-new California CONCEPT has arrived!

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ all-new California CONCEPT was introduced to the world at the Düsseldorf Caravan Salon trade fair on the 24 August. Larger, more comfortable and with greater flexibility, the new model represents the brand’s vision for the camper van of the future.

This new model is built on the Volkswagen Group MQB platform, introducing plug-in hybrid technology to California for the first time.

The most significant advancement of the camper design for California CONCEPT is the addition of a second sliding door, meaning access to the lounge area from either side of the vehicle.

As a result, the kitchen area – complete with induction hob – is now located further back in the vehicle, allowing the left-hand side of the vehicle to be open when camping, creating an outdoor kitchen space.

The vehicle is fitted with a folding-arm awning on the left and a sun sail on the right, ensuring both sides of the vehicle can be protected from sun or rain.

Managing the camper van's features is effortless thanks to a vertical tablet-style control unit. This versatile touch display operates functions such as the pop-up roof, lighting, and power supply.

It is ready for any challenge family life can throw at it, with three-pin and USB sockets available to keep digital devices charged at all times.

Users can also operate these features via the "Cali on Tour" app on their phone or the infotainment system.

Inside, smart design meets practicality. The height-adjustable front seats rotate 180 degrees to create a lounge-like experience for four. Alternatively, the seats are lightweight and removable, providing more space for those with greater storage needs. The configurable interior lighting delivers a cosy, home-like ambience.

The pop-up roof, iconic to the California series, remains. A lightweight aluminium roof shell raises to a height of two metres, giving occupants plenty of space to move around. Occupants are surrounded by three fabric walls, each with large windows, offering incredible panoramic views. A good night’s sleep is guaranteed on the high-quality roof bed with spring plates.
