Insider’s tips for campers:
Sardinia’s hidden treasures
An adventure on the farm: idyllic agriturismos
Do you prefer to holiday away from the hustle and bustle? In Sardinia, a number of family-run farms offer beautiful pitches for mobile homes. Known as agriturismos, these sites not only enable you to experience life in the countryside but also give you the chance to try local delicacies. While some farms let you park your camper vans for free, others may charge a fee, though this is likely to be lower than most campsite prices.
Eating and camping: La Rosa dei Venti
Calling all foodies: Diners at the restaurant La Rosa dei Venti run by Signore Gian Luca in the small village of Sennariolo (on the western coast) can camp there for free. So, how does a slice of pizza or a bowl of pasta followed by a perfectly serene evening gazing at the stars and panoramic views over the sea, sound? The 15 mobile home pitches and tidy facilities are located on a flat, expansive meadow, so there is no shade.
Wild camping by the sea?
Wild camping is officially banned in Sardinia. A few years ago, it was still relatively easy to park up your camper van but now many beach roads and parking spaces are blocked – particularly during the peak season. Nevertheless, there are still a few places, including some by the sea, where you can park your camper van for free or for a fee and leave it overnight or longer. You’ll find spots like this in the parking spaces at Berchida, Porto Giunco or in Santa Margherita at Via Flumindosa. If you’re lucky, you’ll have these spots all to yourself in the early morning – particularly in the off-peak season. Important: in areas where camping is prohibited, do not put up your awning or set out your camping furniture. And don’t forget to leave the area exactly as you would expect to find it, making use of any waste disposal points.
