The Volkswagen Caravelle returns, reimagined for today
Few vehicles have achieved the lasting recognition of Volkswagen's iconic Bus. For generations, it has been synonymous with practicality, versatility and distinctive design. Building on that legacy, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK is welcoming back one of its most celebrated nameplates: the Caravelle. Formerly known as the Multivan, the Caravelle returns not simply as a nostalgic nod, but as a thoroughly modern people carrier shaped for today’s drivers.
The new Caravelle will open for order in the UK in October 2026 with first customer deliveries expected in early 2027.
This article is based on the factory model line-up and may not reflect final UK vehicle specifications, features or availability.
A familiar name, reborn for modern Britain
The Caravelle name has deep roots. First introduced with the T3 generation in 1979, it distinguished Volkswagen’s passenger-focused offering from its commercial siblings. Over time, it became synonymous with premium multiseat transport favoured by families, businesses and VIP shuttle operators alike.
Now, in 2026, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles UK has made a decisive move: bringing back the Caravelle name to replace Multivan in the UK line-up. It’s a strategic return, tapping into decades of recognition and trust while aligning the model with Volkswagen’s global naming approach.
A sharper face for a timeless Icon
The new Caravelle stays true to its iconic VW Bus DNA while projecting a more confident, contemporary presence. Its redesigned front end is immediately recognisable yet distinctly evolved.
Larger LED headlights dominate the face, with a striking light signature defined by a prominent daytime running light strip that spans the headlamp modules like an eyebrow. A sleek, illuminated horizontal bar connects the lights, enhancing the vehicle’s visual width and sophistication particularly in higher spec models.
Beyond aesthetics, the lighting system is vastly improved. Expect brighter, more evenly distributed illumination, enhanced cornering performance and greater range; benefits that directly contribute to safer driving in all conditions.
Lower down, the front bumper has been streamlined into a cleaner, more aerodynamic form. Integrated air intakes and vertical air curtains reinforce the Caravelle’s width and stance, delivering a look that is both functional and unmistakably Volkswagen.
Bringing the Caravelle name back was essential, it’s firmly anchored in people’s minds as a premium multi-seat vehicle, and it reflects the heritage no competitor can match.David HannaManaging Director

Inside: a leap into the digital age
Step inside, and the transformation is even more dramatic. The Caravelle’s cabin has been completely reimagined, blending premium materials with cutting-edge technology.
At the heart of the new interior is a 12.9-inch freestanding infotainment display, paired with the latest Digital Cockpit. Together, they create a seamless digital environment inspired by Volkswagen’s electric ID. Buzz. The infotainment system features a redesigned interface, improved graphics and intuitive navigation, while illuminated touch sliders beneath the screen control climate and audio functions.
Drivers can tailor the Digital Cockpit to their preferences, switching between multiple display views or simplifying the layout for distraction-free long distance driving.
The centre console has also been redesigned for practicality and convenience. A wireless smartphone charging pad, now standard, offers up to 25 watts of power, while upgraded USB-C ports provide faster charging throughout the cabin.
Subtle touches elevate the ambience: enhanced ambient lighting, illuminated cup holders and refined materials with detailed stitching all contribute to a premium, lounge-like feel.
Comfort meets versatility
The new Caravelle places an even greater emphasis on passenger comfort, with thoughtful enhancements designed to make every journey more enjoyable. Higher trim levels, including Life and Style, benefit from additional premium touches such as dual armrests for second-row passengers, helping to create a more refined and relaxing travel experience.
The interior also offers greater scope for personalisation. Alongside classic two-tone colour schemes, customers can choose from premium ArtVelours upholstery or luxurious leather finishes, combining durability with a sophisticated, exclusive feel. The result is a cabin that is as comfortable as it is versatile, whether used for family adventures or executive transport.
Smarter, safer driving
Technology plays a central role in the Caravelle’s evolution. The latest generation of Travel Assist brings semi-automated driving closer to everyday usability.
New features include traffic light recognition and assisted lane changing on motorways, designed to reduce driver workload on long journeys. Integrated within the system is Emergency Assist, which can bring the vehicle safely to a stop if the driver becomes incapacitated.
Efficient power for every journey
Under the bonnet, the Caravelle offers a range of modern powertrains to suit different needs.
Leading the line-up is the eHybrid 4MOTION system, delivering 245 PS through a combination of petrol and electric power, supported by a 19.7 kWh battery. This plug-in hybrid all-wheel-drive setup balances performance with efficiency, ideal for both urban and long-distance travel.
Traditional powertrain options remain available, including a 150 PS turbodiesel engine with front-wheel drive. All models come equipped with a smooth DSG automatic transmission.
Style and personalisation
Caravelle introduces new paint finishes, including elegant two-tone combinations and, for the first time, a matte option in Indium Grey. New alloy wheel designs, ranging from 17 to 19 inches, further expand the opportunities for personalisation.
The Caravelle has always been more than just a people carrier. It’s been a symbol of shared journeys, flexibility and understated style. With its return to the UK, Volkswagen has not only revived a beloved name, but redefined what it stands for.
Blending heritage with innovation, the new Caravelle is poised to carry its legacy forward one journey, one family, one adventure at a time.
