Cooking in the California kitchens
Depending on your California model*, your vehicle is equipped with different kitchen modules and features. When you're on the road and there's no restaurants nearby, it's easy to whip up delicious dinners night after night using your California's kitchen. We’ll tell you how, and even show you some tasty recipes for inspiration!
*UK vehicle specification may vary. Please always check full specification details with your Volkswagen Van Centre prior to ordering.
Variety one:
A fully-equipped kitchen
A gas stove with one or two rings: your cooking knows no bounds in the Grand California and the new California. In the mood for a tasty sweet potato stew? No problem. A medium-rare fillet steak. Sure. In the California, you can enjoy an Alpine outlook, sunset over the Atlantic or the Northern lights while you cook.
Unfortunately, you can’t avoid the washing-up, but the California is equipped with some smart solutions for this too. The deeply recessed sink, for instance, is connected directly to the water mains and almost any pan will fit inside, particularly because you can move the tap for added flexibility. The worktops are another practical feature to highlight. Here you can chop your veg with meticulous accuracy thanks to the cleverly positioned kitchen units and storage areas. As a result, you have plenty of space and everything close to hand. The built-in cool box allows for storage of refridgerated goods, and in the Grand California, you even have a built-in fridge-freezer.
Variety two:
The pull-out kitchen
Intricate meals aren’t your thing? Then you’ll find that the smaller version of our fully equipped kitchenette has everything you need. We call it our “pull-out kitchen module” available with the Caddy California and the new California Beach Camper.
The great thing about this feature is that, instead of having a kitchen inside the vehicle, you get to cook outdoors or in the shelter of the tailgate. This means more space for you and your friends inside the vehicle.
The ability to prepare simple, practical and small, quick meals – that’s what this mini kitchen is all about. The mini kitchen is made up of two pull-out areas: the first one is at the top and consists of a gas stove and a sturdy worktop. You can store all your cooking utensils, like pans, saucepans and cutlery in the second pull-out area at the bottom. The clever railing system also clicks in place, stopping things from flying around or falling over. To sum things up: your freshly fried egg doesn’t have to travel far from the pan to your plate. And the same goes for your coffee, or anything else you need to make or cook for that matter.
Once the meals have been cooked and enjoyed, then it’s time for the washing up. The sink has a large fresh water tank, so there is nothing to delay the washing-up process. Then you can simply stow the sink back into the kitchenette module when you're done.
Summer, sunshine and al fresco cooking
Al fresco cooking – now possible with the new California thanks to the double sliding doors, alowing you to access the vehicle interior from the outside. Pull open the second sliding door and you can use the fridge, folding outdoor table and 230V external socket from outside the vehicle. Why not also pull out the awning for some lovely shade. Chop your veggies, bring your induction plate out, and enjoy the al fresco cooking experience. The socket is integrated directly into the kitchen module for easy access. Whatever you fancy, the freedom is yours.
Dinner time:
Everything in the right place
When you’re cooking, you don't want to be hunting for ingredients and equipment. That’s why the California makes smart use of its storage space. There is the perfect place for every pot, pan, and anything else you’ve brought with you. Saucepans, frying pans and crockery fit nicely into drawers. Spices and other smaller items are stowed in handy cupboards on the wall. Everything is neat, tidy and within easy reach. The drawers are designed not to rattle or spring open while you’re moving, keeping everything in its place.
Inside or outside:
A relaxed atmosphere for dinner
Is dinner ready? Then make yourself comfy! It doesn’t take long to set-up the table that is conveniently stowed away in the kitchen area. This option is ideal, particularly if it is raining outside or the weather is not very nice.
If you're someone who prefers outdoor dining, the California comes with camping chairs and a folding table. The latter is cleverly stowed away in the tailgate or sliding door. Setting up the table is easy, just unfold, click together and you’re done! It couldn’t be simpler. Then all you need are plates, cutlery and glasses and you’re ready for your al fresco dinner experience.
